PlayFootball to develop new site in Swansea

29th September 2006

The Sports and Leisure Group has announced the £2.3 million development of a purpose-built PlayFootball centre in Swansea. The site will open in January 2007, taking the number of small-sided football centres owned by the Group to 7.

PlayFootball’s new 9 pitch centre is being developed in the grounds of Daniel James Community Comprehensive School in Treboeth. It will be free to the school and its feeder primary schools during the day, and will be available for public use during the evenings and weekends.

The new generation PlayFootball facility will have hi-tech 4th Generation rubber crumb surfaces, rebound boards and will be floodlit. The state of the art all weather pitches will be suitable for five-a-side and seven-a-side games. Part of the site facility will also include a four-court badminton hall, a fitness suite, high quality changing areas and a sports bar.

The development is part of an agreement reached with Swansea City Council, based on The Sports and Leisure Group’s land partnership model.

As part of its New Opportunities for PE and Sport in Schools programme the The Big Lottery Fund is contributing £160,000 to the development. This is added to a contribution from the City and County of Swansea of £250,000. The balance of £1.9 million is being met by The Sports and Leisure Group.

Commenting on the announcement, Barry Hunter, CEO of The Sports and Leisure Group said: “The Sports and Leisure Group is delighted to be working with Swansea City Council on the first such private-public funded development in Wales. This enterprise will benefit Daniel James Community Comprehensive School and the wider Swansea community. Upon completion it will take our number of sites to seven and keep us well on track for our ambitious 3 year site development objectives”
